The Province of Chicago dates back to 1865, when French-Canadian leaders south of Chicago invited the Viatorians of the Province of Canada to Bourbonnais, Illinois. They were asked to assume the leadership of the church Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to run a school for boys. Thus, Fr. Pierre Beaudoin, Br. Augustin Martel, and Br. Jean-Baptiste Bernard arrived in the United States, and Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary became their first permanent ministry.<\/p>\n

In 1882, as the members and ministries of the Viatorians expanded, the Congregation established the Province of Chicago with Fr. Cyril Fournier as the first Provincial Superior. Saint Viator Parish was founded in Chicago in 1888 and the Novitiate was moved to the city. It continues today in Chicago as co-sponsors of the Catholic Theological Union, a formation center where Pope Leo XIV and many Viatorians have studied and taught.<\/p>\n

The Viatorians have continued to serve in the Bourbonnais area, where St. Viator College was established and directed from 1868 to 1938 and where they performed various roles in local Catholic schools. In addition to MBVM, they served as pastors of St. George and St. Patrickx and, in 2025, the Sacred Heart parish was added in a very poor rural community not unlike Vourles.<\/p>\n

In the 1950s, the Viatorians purchased farmland in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The building for the Novitiate was constructed there and later the Province Center was established there, with a community chapel, administrative offices, and a residence for elderly Brothers. A portion of the land was occupied to create the Saint Viator High School campus, founded in 1961.<\/p>\n

Also in the 1950s, the Viatorians were invited to the Las Vegas area to establish a school. They founded Bishop Gorman High School and it was administered for nearly 50 years. They were asked to start a parish and the St. Viator Catholic Community and Parish School was established, which continues to be administered today. Additionally, they previously built and served as rectors of the Guardian Angel Shrine, which later became the Guardian Angel Cathedral, and served as pastors of the St. Thomas More Catholic Community in Henderson, Las Vegas, Nevada, a large and prosperous archdiocesan parish.<\/p>\n

As the Church encouraged religious communities to send members to developing countries, Fr. John Stafford, Provincial Superior, sent three Viatorians to found Colegio San Viator in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, in 1961. The Foundation of Colombia has grown by fostering religious vocations among the Colombian people and associate vocations. In 2017, the Viatorians established a second Colegio San Viator in Tunja, and in recent years, a new temple was built for the namesake parish, San Viator Parish in Bogot\u00e1.<\/p>\n

In modern times, the Province of Chicago adopted lay association, beginning in 1999. In addition, the Viatorians became involved in the Cristo Rey network of high schools, which serve families with limited economic resources with a rigorous Catholic education, as well as a corporate work-study experience to prepare them for professional careers. In 2004, the Viatorians helped a group that founded Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan, Illinois, where they continued as the sponsoring religious community. In 2019, Cristo Rey St. Viator College Prep was established in North Las Vegas, Nevada, which they continue to lead today.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the commitment to reading the signs of the times and walking closely with people whom society considers of little importance has led the Viatorians to accompany people in immigration situations. In addition to many forms of activity, advocacy, and service, two Viatorians founded Viator House of Hospitality in 2017, a residential program for young men seeking asylum in the United States.<\/p>\n

Today, Fr. Mark Francis serves as Provincial Superior of the Clerics of Saint Viator. He is assisted by Fr. Richard Rinn, Provincial Assistant, and councilors Br. Michael Gosch, Fr. Edgar Suarez and Fr. Thomas von Behren.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
